On Monday, May 29, 2023, LEONARD M. "Len" PARVER, M.D.C.M., of McLean, VA, after a year-long courageous fight with non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. Dr. Parver was a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology. He was well-known in national and local medical communities of Ophthalmic Retina specialists, having practiced in this field for nearly 50 years.
He was initially trained in ophthalmology at McGill University Medical School in Montreal, Canada, followed by specialization in retina and vitreous surgery with Dr. Harvey Lincoff at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center and Dr. Ron Michaels at Johns Hopkins Wilmer Eye Institute. Dr. Parver then fulfilled his "Berry Plan" military commitment as a Navy Lieutenant Commander at Bethesda Naval Hospital (now Walter Reed National Military Medical Center) prior to opening his Retina Consultants medical practice in 1977, now part of Capital Eye Care. As an eye doctor, his passions were scientific research and caring for his patients. During his lengthy and distinguished career, Dr. Parver received numerous honors and achievements. He was the co-founder and past President of the Washington Academy of Ophthalmology, a Heed Fellow, a member of the prestigious American Ophthalmological Society (AOS), a member of the Retina, Vitreous, and Macula Societies and a member of the Cosmos Club. He also was named Washingtonian Magazine's "Top Doctor" multiple times. Faculty appointments included Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at Georgetown University and Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at Wilmer Eye Institute. Other appointments included Founder and Director of the National Eye Trauma and Suburban Hospital Eye Trauma Services, past member of the Board of Directors of Prevent Blindness America (formerly NSPB) and most recently, Research Consultant at the National Institutes of Health working with Dr. Alan Schechter, Molecular Medicine Branch, NIDDk, studying the effects of nitric oxide in the eye. He was the Principal Investigator and co-Principal Investigator of several NIH grants and the lead author and co-author of over 50 peer-reviewed scientific journal publications and abstracts.
In addition to being deeply missed by hundreds of grateful patients over his many years of providing them with caring services, Len will be forever in the hearts and minds of his beloved family. Dearest wife of 55 years, Corrine Propas Parver, darling son, Dr. David Leland Parver (Maya Beth Godofsky), sweetest daughter, Deborah Gayle Parver Oremland, Esq. (Ryan Banks Oremland) and most precious and brilliant grandchildren, Lia Rose Oremland, Noa Ruby Parver, Talia Mae Parver and Robert Daniel "Bobby" Oremland, dear brother, Ronald Parver (Molly Fitzgerald) and loving nieces, Allison Parver, PA (John Hoysgaard) and Dr. Victoria Parver (Dr. David Axelrod) and their children, Charlotte and Will. Len was the beloved son of the late Herman and Mildred Leibowitz Parver.
